John Calvin, like his teachers in the Roman Catholic Church, believed is was proper to torture and murder those who didn’t agree with him.

1. Michael Servetus
Michael Servetus was a leading physician and scientist of his day. He was a heretic, so he was arrested and burned at the stake for his heresy. The torturers, with Calvin’s approval, used damp wood that would burn more slowly to prolong the agony of burning to death. Servetus screamed in pain as it took a half hour for the fire to finish him off. We are to take a firm stand against false teaching, but what kind of Christian piety would murder and torture a heretic like this?

2. Alleged Witches in Geneva
At least 20 alleged witches were murdered in Geneva during Calvin’s reign as the “Protestant Pope” in that city.

3. The Salem Witch Trials, 1692
In Salem, Massachusetts, 20 people and 2 dogs were put to death for alleged witchcraft. The perpetrators of this dastardly act were Calvinists – spiritual followers of John Calvin. Although many Calvinists today shudder at the atrocity, this was an act of the followers of John Calvin. They were just doing what their teacher did.
